Retired Awards

Over the years, SLB has offered a variety of awards to support members in various education and career stages.  The Society's award program has evolved to further support members in all stages of life.  The following awards have been retired in order to allow for growth and opportunity to meet the needs of the membership. While these award mechanisms are retired, the accomplishments of those honored in the past remain meritorious.

Dolph O. Adams Award

This award honored the outstanding macrophage researcher Dolph O. Adams, MD, Ph.D. The award recognized excellence of an investigator working in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms of host defense and inflammation and was selected from among junior/mid-career candidates. In 2010 the award was re-booted to replace a previous JLB award with the same title. The award was retired in 2022 and incorporated into the Excellence in Leukocyte Biology award program recognizing contributions from early and mid-career scientists from all identity groups.

G. Jeanette Thorbecke Award

This award commemorates the memory of Jeanette Thorbecke, M.D., Ph.D. an internationally recognized immunologist who died on November 16, 2001, at the age of 72, in Maui, Hawaii. During her illustrious career, spanning over five decades, she published more than 400 papers, mentored a plethora of young investigators, and leaves behind a legacy of scientific and personal accomplishments. This award was established and presented to a deserving young female investigator. The awardee was selected from junior faculty (holding a faculty position for fewer than 5 years). The award was retired in 2022 and incorporated into the Excellence in Leukocyte Biology award program recognizing contributions from early and mid-career scientists from all identity groups.

DEI: Paper of the Year Award

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee created the “DEI Paper of the Year Award" to recognize published members who self-identify as belonging to underrepresented groups in science or those that fostered work towards equity.  The award was retired in 2022 and incorporated into the Excellence in Leukocyte Biology award program recognizing contributions from early and mid-career scientists from all identity groups.

Early Career Faculty Travel Award

This award was created to support early career members in attending the annual meeting. The award was retired in 2022 and incorporated into the Excellence in Leukocyte Biology award program recognizing contributions from early and mid-career scientists from all identity groups.
